– SHACK THOUGHTS – 10 YEARS AGO TODAY
I love the whole medley of Creole Love Call with the bass line from Snake Anthony, and it’s real nice in this acoustic setting … after that moves into some open space and further improvisation, we get a breakdown with Chris & Billy before the start up the Down On Me/Tsukemono medley — last seen in fall 2000, I think, and the first performance of this medley since Down On Me debuted in its usual arrangement in spring ’03. Cool shit happening in this show and we’re only half way through the first set! Let’s Go (aka Everyone Poops) follows; Afrique is always welcome, as is ITAHTLMJ — and the Unknown/Improv to close the set is sweet! If anyone recognizes it as an actual tune, please speak up!
Similarly, Set II has an unknown that I’m sure is an actual tune, which I’ve now dubbed “NYC Acoustic ’06” — again, please let me know if you know this as a song (I almost thought it was an instrumental take on one of the tunes from the children’s album, like The Train Song or On An Airplane, which are just the blues as well, but then I wasn’t sure! HA! Sounds damn familiar … but maybe I’ve just heard this track too many times!). That comes after a set that began with a cool solo by Chris > Brigas Nunca Mais (another welcome tune) > nice little outro by John > at the time new tune, Cat Creeps, followed by yet another outro from John.
Waking Up (aka The Squalb) was a favourite of mine during this time and still is. I love the sound of this tune. The Letter done acoustically is still heavy! And the closing out of the set with We’re All Connected was new at the time (we’d tentatively titled it “Beautiful”, but then it came out on the kid’s album in ’08).
enjoy the grooves,
dug
