– SHACK THOUGHTS –
The Shack Project celebrates MMW @25 years!
Wonderful to hear the trio back together making music. First set opens with some Thundercloud chanting leading the band into some explorative grooves before jumping into their repertoire. 2nd set begins with a cool low-key Drum Solo that results in a Night Marchers beat — cool tweaked intro to the tune as well — and then we’re off through another smattering of older tunes. There is a “new” tune I’ve dubbed “Slow NYC ’17”, but not sure if it’s a wacky tune or cool improvisation … time may tell, but we may never know …
I say this not as a complaint but as an observation: where are all the new tunes that came out in the 20 Singles celebrating the band’s 20th anniversary in 2011? There were SO MANY great tunes in that mix, along with the few existing tunes they recorded and released in the batch, and while we’re still hearing some of those existing tunes (i.e. Shackman), we’re not getting any of the KILLER new tunes they recorded that year (i.e. Me2, Tiznit Stomp, Last of a Kind, Make Room for Another, Stubborn Comfort, Seashack, Palo Santo, etc.) SO MANY GREAT TUNES!
That said, my favourite “new tunes” are always those the trio creates in the moment on stage, and this gig does not disappoint!
enjoy the grooves,
dug

Hey – it sounds like Medeski has an organ-like patch on a synth with a pitch bender in here. Track 4 at 2:10. What kind of synth was he using? Anybody know? Thanks!
